December 2013 marks the end of a very long journey in writing SELF-CARE REFORM: How to Discover Your Own Path to Good Health; two years in organizing and fine tuning it, but four years of actual content gathering, to be exact. This project was quite therapeutic for me. I have been a personal fitness trainer since 1990 and one of my greatest frustrations has not being able to understand people’s motive for leading unhealthy lifestyles. I have always believed that if I could understand people, empathize with them, and help them move through the change process, I will have brought them into the healthy lifestyle that so many people desire. For those currently engaged in living the healthy lifestyle that I promote, wonderful; my mission is to help them stay connected and involved in that way of life.
SELF-CARE REFORM: How to Discover Your Own Path to Good Health, is my way of connecting with people that I don’t get to meet personally and have the privilege of working with. My hope is that this book will reach you where you are and get you ready or help you continue to act. Although many of the techniques I use can be applied to any area of your life, I focus on the areas related to your physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental areas of your life and how they relate to your health and wellness.
The healthcare in our country is in a state of crisis. Chronic disease rates are as high as ever and insurance premiums are reflective of that. All of this is happening in the age of information. We are told that we need to exercise regularly, eat healthy, manage our stress, and get enough sleep. But, has this helped? For the most part, NO! It’s human nature to build a wall of resistance when being told what to do.
However, there is a silver lining to this dark cloud … when we choose our own path we’re more likely to stick with it than when someone else chooses it for us. It’s easier to own it when we individually design and have control over it. Not only that, but we typically choose a way that will be less arduous and more enjoyable, and therefore, more sustainable.
